it is possible your drivers can't support monitor mode and hopefully there are patched drivers out there for you. I need to know how to restart networking as well I have also just been rebooting to get it back up after coming out of mon mode. If you follow these steps, you should not have to recompile the kernel at all, but rather the drivers will be built against the kernel source and can then be inserted
